5 reasons to have a maternity session (AND HOW TO ENJOY IT)

For a few rare people, the idea of having a maternity session is as exciting as the idea of having a baby, especially if you are experiencing a good pregnancy and feeling particularly glowy.

But you wouldn’t be alone if your first thought was something like “OH HELL NO!”…especially if your body has transformed to a place you might not have imagined it ever going - crazy hormones, lumpy and bumpy bodies, swollen ankles, stretch marks, an unwanted 20 kilos...I get it, when you think about these things, the last thing you want is for them to be captured.

If that sounds like you, then this article is for YOU!

Tip #1

Pregnancy isn’t always pretty. And let me tell you a secret - hardly anyone is saying ‘Oh YAY I can’t wait to have my photo taken!’.

Everyone (including me) feels nervous about jumping in front of the camera; and I’m here to remind you that your bump is beautiful. You are beautiful.

No matter how pregnancy has affected your body, and no matter how nauseous, fat, tired, achy, whale-like you are feeling right now, we don’t see any of those things. All we are seeing is a woman creating life.

Some people will be envious of you, some will be in awe of you. Be in awe of yourself.

Pregnancy is also a great excuse to actually not worry about all the lumps and bumps in your body, it’s the best excuse of all time to be carrying a few extra kg’s - and we all know that swelling and weight gain is a part of pregnancy for most people (it’s probably the only time in your life that you can get away with it). So flaunt it!

If you need some extra help feeling like a goddess, it’s a good excuse to pamper yourself a little! We always priortise ourselves last, and if you think it will help give your confidence a little boost, go and indulge in some professional hair and makeup! It might also be your last opportunity to get this done before baby comes. Think hair, makeup, mani + pedi - anything to help you feel fab, and extra special (it’ll bring out whatever pregnancy glow you’ve been hiding under those extra-stretchy leggings and dresses).

Tip #2

It’s not your job to be a model, it’s my job to guide you through it.

First up, let me reassure you that all women, and all pregnant mama’s are self concsious about their appearance. Even the most confident of women get a bit stressed about having their photo taken, because no matter how “beautiful” you are, you can still look really bad in photos if someone captures you at the wrong angle or in bad lighting.

It’s not your job to know what to do in front of the camera. It’s my job to help you forget about all those lumps and bumps and things that make you feel self-conscious, and instead to get you focused on all the love and excitement you and your partner are feeling.

During maternity sessions with me, your bump is never the main focus; we won’t spend your whole session taking photos of you posing with your hand on your belly (because, boring). Instead, I want to capture things like the way your partner tenderly touches your tummy. The way you laugh and look at each other, the way he holds you extra gently, your glow, your joy, your excitement - I’m all about capturing what it feels like, not just what it looks like. I’ll tell you where to stand, and then give you something to do - it’s all casual, and I’ll be my general dorky, geeky and nerdy self to draw out your natural emotions.

Tip #3

This bump is a once-in-a-lifetime event - CELEBRATE IT

Maybe it took you a really long time to get pregnant, and you want to capture this moment now that you are finally here.

Maybe this is your third pregnancy.

No matter what, each pregnancy is unique and will deliver you an experience (and a baby) that is unique to this world and I want to help you celebrate it!

And if you don’t take any images of this pregnancy, with this child, you’ll never have them, ever again. You can’t get these moments back once they are gone, so if there is ever a time to entrust yourself to the hands of a professional photographer, it’s now.

Maternity sessions are also the last opportunity for you to have professional photos of you guys before your family dynamic completely changes (and my sessions are always about capturing your emotional connections - what it feels like, not just what it looks like remember).

These sessions are also a beautiful way to bond and re-connect with your partner - lots of snuggles, and ways to remember how much you love each other.

Tip #4

Do me a favour, and if you have a mum, call her now and ask her if she remembers what she looked like when she was pregnant? Does she have photos of herself pregnant? Do you love seeing your mum at this special time in her life? I am betting that you do.

My mum doesn’t have any photos from when she was pregnant with me, and only one photo when she was pregnant with my brother, and I love that photo so much. I love knowing what she looked like, and seeing her glow.

Take a minute to think about your children when they are older, maybe they’ll be equally delighted to see the photos of their pregnant mum, to see you and your emotions and to see how much you and your partner love each other.

And I can promise you that as soon as that baby is born, you’ll start to forget what it looked and felt like to be pregnant, and part of you will miss your bump.

These photos are for future you - in ten, twenty, thirty years when your memory is fading, when the babies are all big and grown up and moved out, you’ll come back to these images and love them, hard.

If nothing else - get them so you it’s not on your regrets list. It’s better to have them, and never look at them, rather than not have them and wish that you did.

Tip #5

A Professional vs the iphone

When making a decision about whether to have a maternity session or not, don’t base your decision on the photos your friends or family have taken of you on a smart phone! Our friends and family all have this amazing ability to take horrendous photos of us - but the photos a professional can take of you will be ten times better. A professional photographer understands that certain angles are more flattering than others, that lighting is key. Most importantly, they’ll be able to guide you to feel amazing on the inside and outside.

The more I do this job, the more I realise I’m like a confidence coach! Empowering women to see themselves in a different, and positive way, fills me with so much joy. Because I truly

being able to show you how we see you (and help you fight the little body image gremlins inside your head) is so fulfilling for me.

Bonus Tip #6

Having your photo taken doesn’t have to be scary - neither me or my camera’s bite and I’m going to do my absolute best to look after you, make you feel comfortable with me, feel like a goddess and LOVE the photos that we capture together. I’ll be showing you photos as we go throughout the session, and once you see how freaking FABULOUS you look, you are going to feel it too.

I take pride in making sure every single one of my clients leaves their maternity session feeling like a total goddess ♥
